When Stuart Murdoch launched his indie-pop band Belle & Sebastian almost 30 years ago in Glasgow, this happened as part of a social project for the unemployed – Murdoch himself was long unable to work at the time due to a chronic illness and was therefore looking for an occupation that he too could manage. Nevertheless, he established himself, as unintentionally as he was swiftly, as an outstanding leading light of the entire UK indie scene. Belle & Sebastian – almost unchanged since the turn of the millennium, consisting of Murdoch (vocals, guitar), Stevie Jackson (guitar), Chris Geddes (keyboard), Sarah Martin (vocals, violin), Dave McGowan (guitar, bass), Bobby Kildea (guitar, bass) and Richard Colburn (drums) – have long been among the most important representatives of this genre and celebrate enormous international success. Almost every one of their twelve albums to date has charted in the UK Top 20 and the Scottish Top Ten album charts.
