- Abokonzert 12.11.2026, 20 Uhr Prinzregententheater HOME IN A FOREIGN LAND – FOREIGNNESS IN THE HOMELAND. In the work of Claude Vivier and Chaya Czernowin, this dialectic is existential. As an orphan of unknown parents, a homosexual, and a French-Canadian, Vivier saw himself repeatedly marginalized. His lifelong search for his biological mother led him to Paris, where he was murdered by a prostitute in March 1983. Three years prior, he reflected on himself with ›Lonely Child‹. Czernowin's work revolves around origin and identity, her parents' Holocaust experiences, and the political conflicts in her homeland Israel. In ›Birds‹ from 1984, birds stand for the longing to overcome divided skies. A threshold work is the ›Petite Suite‹ by Claude Debussy, premiered in March 1889. While it is still rooted in French Romanticism, it simultaneously anticipates the future. At the Pariser Weltausstellung 1889, Debussy would later encounter Gamelan music from Java. With it, he created his Impressionism: a sonically new French homeland and identity. On his second journey to London, Haydn composed the Sy in 1794/95.
