Previously, she was based in Denver for over a decade, where she developed her distinctive sound and was deeply involved in the local art and music scene. Her project Midwife originated in 2014 during her time at the legendary DIY cultural space Rhinoceropolis. Live, Johnston is known for her minimalist, emotionally charged blend of experimental pop and atmospheric sound art, capable of transforming entire rooms into tense silence. On her recordings, she creates multi-layered, dense soundscapes, thus occupying a unique niche within heavy and experimental music. She describes her style as "Heaven Metal" – emotional music about destruction, loss, and catharsis. At the heart of her songwriting is grief in all its facets and manifestations. With great sensitivity and haunting intensity, Johnston explores the different faces of loss, pain, and healing.
